Choosing a Bank for Your
Small Business

Opening a small business can be an exciting time; it can also be one of the most frantic. One thing you should not have to worry about is your money, whether it is start up capital, finding a loan or simply arranging for merchant services. This is why choosing a bank that fits well with you and your business is vital.

Not all banks are the same. In fact, there are some banks have branches that are designed specifically to cater to small businesses within a certain market. In other words, these branches are business branches; while they may take personal accounts; their primary focus is going to be helping businesses. Business accounts also have different rates, conditions and qualifications that are not found with personal accounts and the bank you use for personal services may not be suited for business needs.

When looking for a bank to suit your business needs there are a few things to take into consideration.

Connection - Just as with personal banking you are going to want to connect with the people and the bank you have handling your business transactions.

Online Services - You should be able to do anything you want from the internet, transfer funds, pay bills, manage your account, loan applications, even cash management features to help send invoice, manage payments and payroll should all be part of the online services offered by your bank.

Check to see if there is a bank in your area that deals specifically with your industry. These banks are going to be better equipped to provide you with services you need and advice that fits with your business. You may find that if the industry is strong in your area there will be branches designed to help you.

Check to see if the bank is associated with small business association for loan guarantees. This can go a long way to helping you get the financing you need.

Other things to consider are the fees. Business accounts are going to have a different fee set for transactions that can be found on personal accounts. They may even differ from bank to bank. The fees however are not quite as important as the other factors. You are going to want a number of online and cash management services for your business that you would not even consider needed for a personal account. Comparison shopping for banks is not easy. There are dozens of options they may be listed differently, may have different fees attached or may even be attached to different levels of accounts.

This is why it is best to look at the criteria of online services, cash management services, the personal connection that you want from a vital business partner. You will also want to speak to the loan manager or representative in charge of small business loans whether you are attempting to get a loan or not. This establishes friendly relations and helps you to determine if the bank is right for you and your business.
