Book Review
Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Black Book of Connections

I bought my first Jeffrey Gitomer book at an airport, and I read it on my flight home from a business trip. That book was his Little Red Book of Sales. I was hooked. I have since read every Gitomer book I can find.

Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Black Book of Connections, subtitled 6.5 Assets for Networking Your Way to RICH Relationships, was published in 2006 and is much like his other "little" books - it is small (so it fits easily in a briefcase or suit pocket), the writing style is conversational, the information is provided in small easy-to-comprehend bits, and it covers its topic quite comprehensively.

One of my favorite features of the book are the "Git Bits" sprinkled throughout the book. These are assorted passwords to enter into the Git Bit box on his website to access additional information, like his "four page detailed description of power positioning" (p. 123) and the "40.5 Gitomer info-bits that you need to know about others to connect on a more personal level and build a relationship" (p. 85).

Gitomer is famous for his lists that end in a .5 (6.5 assets, 8.5 ways to do this or that, etc.) and this book is no disappointment in that regard. There are plenty of lists and easy to read text broken up by color text to emphasize important points(typically red), cartoons, and bullet points.

The 6.5 Assets referenced in the subtitle are:

  • Asset 1: Who do I know?
  • Asset 2: What do I know?
  • Asset 3: What do I do?
  • Asset 4: How do I connect?
  • Asset 5: Who knows you?
  • Asset 6: The secret power of connections.
  • Asset 6.5: The value of connections.

The table of contents is very detailed, allowing the book to be effectively used as a reference tool after its initial reading.

There are so many strategies in this book for networking and building relationships and connections that is would be just as useful for experienced networkers as for beginners. It is focused on developing relationships for general business purposes and, of course, sales - but it is also a must-read for network marketers, especially those who are relatively new to the business.

I highly recommend this book, as well as the others by Jeffrey Gitomer. Each is a gold mine of sales and business building strategies!
